How to Find a Lawyer in Mauritius
Mauritius has a split legal profession, so "I need a lawyer" is really three different questions. Here's how the profession works, which practitioner your matter needs, and how to engage one.
The three branches of the profession
Barristers (avocats) are the advocates: they plead before the courts, draft pleadings and opinions, and advise on the law. Senior barristers may take silk as Senior Counsel. If your matter is headed to court or you need an opinion on your legal position, a barrister is involved.
Attorneys (avoués) conduct the procedural side of litigation: filing, service, formal steps before the courts, and instructing barristers. In practice, a litigant often engages an attorney who then briefs the right barrister for the case.
Notaries (notaires) authenticate deeds. Property transfers, mortgages, marriage contracts, and much of succession practice legally require a notarial deed: no property purchase in Mauritius completes without one.
The three branches have separate professional bodies: the Mauritius Bar Association, the Mauritius Law Society, and the Chamber of Notaries.
Which one does your matter need?
- Dismissed from your job / employment dispute → attorney + barrister (see our employment law overview)

- Divorce, custody, maintenance → attorney + barrister (see family law)
- Company formation, shareholder dispute, insolvency → barrister and/or attorney, often with a management company for global business (see company law)
- Regulatory or licensing issue with the FSC or a bank → barrister with financial-services practice (see financial services law)
- Drafting a will or handling a succession → notary, with counsel for contested estates
